The Covid-19 has changed on how we educate our future generations. With the Schools shut there is hardly a difference between a bedroom and a classroom or a hall and a playground. The mode of schooling and learning has been changed to remote learning. Looking at the current scenario which the country and whole education industry is facing, Varthana came up with a novel solution to educate children of pre-primary known as e-Kinder.
e-Kinder is an online skill-based activity program developed by Varthana for pre-primary school students using WhatsApp as a platform. This unique program is developed to address the learning gaps that may arise in pre-primary schools due to the Covid-19 situation. All the activities chosen are simple, age-appropriate, fun, engaging, uses materials easily available at home, and to be done under parental supervision and guidance. The activities included have clear learning outcomes which are in turn aligned with the development of respective skills.

Activities included are based on pre-primary 05 areas of development:

Physical development (Fine and Gross)

Physical development includes fine and gross motor skill development. Fine motor skills help the child to use small muscles, especially their hands and fingers, to pick up small objects, hold a spoon, turn pages in a book, or use a crayon to draw. Gross motor skills help the child to use large muscles, for example, a six-month-old baby learns how to sit up with some support, a 12-month-old baby learns to pull up to a stand holding onto furniture, and a five older learns to skip.

Social and emotional development

This is the child’s ability to interact with others including helping themselves and self-control. Example, a six-week-old baby smiling, a ten-month-old baby waving bye-bye, or a five-year-old boy knowing how to take turns in games at school.

Cognitive development

Ability to the child to learn and solve problems. For example, a two-month-old baby learning to explore the environment with hands or eyes or a five-year-old learning how to do simple math problems.

Creative development

It is the process of developing creative abilities in children through exploration, decision making, and expression.
For example, a five-year-old preschooler collecting leaves of different shapes in the garden, drawing a favourite animal, creating a pot using waste material.

Language development

The child’s ability to both understand and use language. Example, this includes a 12-month old baby saying his first words, a two-year-old naming parts of her body, or a five-year-old learning to say ‘feet’ instead of ‘foots’

Thrice a week (one skill per week) the school receives, content on WhatsApp, in the following manner:

  • Self-explanatory and pictorial posters
  • Audio explaining posters in regional languages

Though remote learning is challenging in terms of having good internet, smartphone and availability of parents at home to coordinate with educators. Varthana and Education institutions are ensuring that learning never stops even at home and during the crisis.
