Although he belonged to a modest farming family and was the youngest of four siblings, his family cherished education, fostering Khemchand’s aspirations from an early age.

“Even in challenging times, we believed that education could unlock opportunities that farming by itself could not,” Khemchand recalls. “It was more than just acquiring knowledge—it focused on building a future with limitless opportunities.”

During that period, there was increasing recognition of how education could aid individuals in overcoming poverty and improving their lives. Khemchand encountered several obstacles yet stayed resolute. He always pursued his education and ultimately discovered a school that turned into a face of hope and motivation for many children.

“I envisioned this school as more than merely a classroom,” he expresses. “It needed to be a place where kids could envision great things and discover their real abilities.”

Early Life and Education

Khemchand grew up in a rural environment, facing challenges, but his parents ensured he had the best opportunities. This led him to Navodaya Vidyalaya Kundeshwar, where he says, “Navodaya played a key role in shaping my character and building my confidence.”

At Navodaya, Khemchand excelled in both academics and personal growth. Though he dreamed of joining the army, he didn’t pass the physical tests in the 12th grade. “That setback didn’t stop me,” he recalls. “It made me realize that challenges can lead you to new paths.”

Instead of settling for small jobs, he aimed higher and set his sights on civil services. Although he didn’t reach that goal, his passion for teaching led him in a new direction. “Teaching gave me a sense of purpose,” he says. “It allowed me to inspire others to chase their dreams.”

From Coaching Center to School Founder

With the support of his friends, Khemchand started a coaching center to help students prepare for exams. “Our approach was different,” he says. “We offered free education to children in the community, focusing on foundational subjects to help them succeed.”

This initiative brought great results, with many students excelling in their studies. As word spread, parents encouraged Khemchand to take the next step and open a school. “The success of the coaching center showed me that we were on the right path,” he shares. “It was clear that the community needed more opportunities for quality education.”

In response to this encouragement, Khemchand founded Nalanda Kids Care Academy, inspired by the ancient Nalanda University, known for drawing students from across the world. “Naming the academy after Nalanda was symbolic,” he explains. “I wanted to provide education that went beyond borders, enriching young minds and creating global opportunities.”

School’s Growth

The academy began with merely 60 students, yet due to effort and commitment, enrollment surged rapidly. “By the following year, we had around 250 to 300 students,” he remembers with a grin.

Khemchand’s dedication to education was rewarded, and by 2004, the school transformed into a higher secondary institution with 1,250 students. “It was an important accomplishment,” he states. “Our efforts and commitment to the community were genuinely beginning to yield positive results.”

In 2012, Khemchand established a second branch in Palera and entrusted the original school to a committee. “This enabled me to concentrate on broadening our perspective even more,” he notes. “It was a move aimed at reaching more children and having a greater influence.”

Holistic Development Among Students

Khemchand’s dedication to education goes beyond just academics. He believes in the importance of the overall development of his students. “I always stress the importance of physical health and well-being,” he says. “I believe schools should focus on students’ health as much as their academic success.” His approach shows that he understands a healthy body supports a healthy mind. “This approach ensures that students grow not only in knowledge but also in strength,” he adds, showing his belief in balanced growth for every student.

Inspiration and Mentorship

Khemchand has been inspired by many mentors during his life, but one who stands out is Vikram Joshi, a respected teacher at his school, Navodaya Vidyalaya. “I learned so much from Joshi about the value of perseverance, dedication, and the importance of quality education,” Khemchand shares. “His constant support for students, including providing meals, had a big impact on me.” This kindness and dedication shaped Khemchand’s own views on teaching. “Joshi’s example taught me how to be an educator who truly cares about the well-being of students.”

Varthana’s Support

Facing financial difficulties, Khemchand turned to Varthana for support, which proved to be a turning point. “Thanks to this connection, I was able to secure a loan of ₹3.4 lakh,” he explains. “This allowed me to buy the essential furniture and make the necessary upgrades to the school’s infrastructure.”

This strategic decision helped the academy stay afloat and maintain a stable enrollment of around 250 to 300 students. “It was a lifeline for us,” he says. “With the financial support, we were able to continue providing quality education and keep the academy running smoothly.”

Vision for the Future

Looking ahead, Khemchand dreams of taking Nalanda Kids Care Academy to higher secondary status, aspiring to match the excellence of Navodaya Vidyalaya. “My vision goes beyond academics,” he says. “I want to instill a sense of nationalism and unity in my students, teaching them to respect all religions.” Khemchand believes that education isn’t just about knowledge, but about building values that hold society together.

He has a clear message for parents and the community: “Do not place unrealistic expectations on your children; let them explore their education freely,” he advises. “Rather than focusing on luxury facilities, choose schools with dedicated, skilled teachers who care about student learning,” Khemchand stresses the importance of creating an environment that encourages learning, as it is vital for nurturing brilliant minds.

Khemchand Kushwaha, Nalanda Kids Care Academy, MP Khemchand Kushwaha was born in 1975, during an era when rural India was slowly transforming in terms of education and modernity.
