“I remember my grandfather always saying education teaches people how to live and rise above their circumstances. That belief continues to inspire me every day,” shared Qutubuddin as he started a conversation about his school, Bal Uday Model Inter College.

Qutubuddin is the principal of the school founded by his father and has committed himself to a lifelong pursuit: bringing quality education to the children in his community.

Influenced by his grandfather’s belief in education as a lifeline, he took the helm of Bal Uday Model Inter College at a time when there were fewer schools in this area and fewer schools for girls. Though faced with many challenges, his leadership and vision have made the school become a beacon of learning for the 800 students.

A New Approach Towards Quality Education

Bal Uday Model Inter College was established in 2000 by Qutubuddin’s father to meet the dire need for accessible education in the area. “At that time, parents from my locality were reluctant to send their children, especially daughters, to distant schools,” shared Qutubuddin. He added, “Even local educational options were limited to Dadri, Janta Inter College, or government schools.”

Beginning with two rooms, the school expanded year after year, and in 2018, with a loan from Varthana Finance, a third building was built. This growth has allowed the school to accommodate the needs of its growing number of students through academic learning as well as extracurricular activities, all without a sports ground.

He described that the school emphasizes activity-based learning, teaching instructors to recognize student needs instead of punishing them. This approach has created a more nurturing environment that supports the development of students’ academic and personal lives.

Tackling Challenges with Courage

Running a school in a rural area comes with its own set of challenges. One of the primary hurdles faced by Bal Uday Model Inter College was the low fees charged, which resulted in financial deficits in the initial years. “We have kept the fees low because education should be accessible to everyone,” says Qutubuddin, “but that means three out of every student is studying free of cost.”

Another challenge was the need for more qualified teachers in the local area. Initially, teachers were hired from Aligarh, and accommodations were provided. Now, the school attracts teachers from Ghaziabad, helping to elevate the standard of education further.

Despite these hurdles, the school has seen remarkable achievements. Every year, students from the school rank as district toppers, with one student, Mansi, securing the 6th position in the district. Girls from the school consistently perform well in exams, breaking barriers in a traditionally conservative society.

The Stepping Stone

Bal Uday Model Inter College has achieved some excellent results, despite its modest background. The school hosts various functions like Independence Day, Republic Day, and Women’s Day, through which students gain confidence, learn teamwork, and express their creativity.

One of the turning points in the school’s journey was its relationship with Varthana, a financial institution that supports educational ventures. Varthana provided the much-needed loan to construct the third building, further expanding the school’s capacity. Varthana’s relationship manager, Sachin Tomar, was critical in facilitating the loan. “The process was smooth, and Sachin guided us throughout,” says Qutubuddin. The partnership with Varthana has been vital in the school’s continued growth and its ability to offer more to its students.

The school’s impact is evident in its thriving alumni network, including AIIMS doctors, engineers, teachers, and government officers. Bal Uday Model Inter College graduates have gone on to secure admissions in prestigious institutions like JMI, DU, and Navodaya Vidyalaya.

Looking to the future, Qutubuddin envisions further expanding the school’s capabilities. Plans are underway to build smart classes and to gain recognition for a new school under the CBSE board in Bulandshahr.

Discussing his goal, Qutubuddin shared, “We have plans to rent a ground nearby to introduce sports activities for our students,” highlighting the continuous effort to enhance the school’s offerings.

Conclusion

“We may have started small, but with each challenge we overcome, we are building a brighter future for our students,” Qutubuddin says as he reflects on the school’s journey. Envisioning the future, he hopes that Varthana will support further in his school’s growth to make a continued value in the community and help to shape tomorrow’s leaders.

Bal Uday Model Inter College has been a good example of success through the determination of individuals. It survived the leadership of Qutubuddin and also thrived and created hundreds of opportunities for those students who, otherwise, could not have achieved their quality education goals.
