Omaram Godra, Sarvodaya Upper Primary School, Jodhpur
From Fields to Classrooms
In the remote village of Nandvan, Jodhpur, Sarvodaya Upper Primary School stands as a symbol of hope and opportunity, thanks to the unwavering dedication of Omaram Godra. His vision goes beyond the school walls; it’s a reflection of his deep desire to uplift his community through education.
Born into a farming family, Omaram’s journey from the fields to starting a school is one of determination. “Shiksha ek Seva hai, aur seva karne se sukoon milta hai” (Education is a service, and serving others brings peace), he says. For Omaram, education wasn’t just for personal success; it was about transforming the lives of children around him.
Growing up, Omaram saw the daily struggles in his village, the lack of opportunities, and the dreams that were cut short because education was out of reach. He says, “I’ve always believed that every child, no matter how difficult their background, deserves a fair chance at success. Education can truly change lives.” Despite facing numerous obstacles in his own learning journey, Omaram never let go of his dream to make a difference for the children in his village.
Initial Journey Response
In 2004, driven by his deep sense of responsibility towards his community, Omaram made a bold decision. “With few resources but a heart full of determination, I decided to start Sarvodaya Upper Primary School,” he recalls. It wasn’t an easy choice, as it meant stepping into unknown territory, facing risks, and dealing with uncertainty. But Omaram remained focused. He believed that education had the power to change lives and saw school as a way to inspire the future generation of leaders and thinkers.
Sarvodaya Upper Primary School started small, with rented rooms serving as its first classrooms. “Even before the school opened, word spread quickly in the village. Families were eager to enroll their children,” says Omaram. He continues, “Seeing so many parents wanting a better future for their children gave me the strength to keep going.”
Equipping Students for the Future
Despite the challenges he faced, Omaram was committed to providing the best education for his students. “I invested most of my resources into the school, including a second-hand computer to introduce technology,” he shares. In a village with few resources, this small step showed his dedication to progress. “To prepare students for the future, we needed access to modern tools,” he explains.
Omaram didn’t stop there. Understanding that a supportive learning environment was crucial, he asked a local carpenter to build blackboards for the school. “To my surprise, the carpenter refused payment, saying education is a service and he was honored to help,” Omaram recalls. This was a touching reminder that when people unite for a common cause, incredible things can happen for the children of Nandvan.
School’s Growth Over the Years
Over the years, Sarvodaya Upper Primary School has become a shining example of educational excellence in the entire community. “Our unique features, such as a well-stocked library, transportation options, a spacious playground, and personalized attention for sick students, truly set us apart from other schools,” says Omaram.
But perhaps the school’s greatest achievement lies in the success of its students. “Many alumni from our school have accomplished remarkable things. Some have secured prestigious government jobs, while others have pursued higher education and made significant contributions to their communities,” he shares.
Their achievements reflect the quality education and support they received at the school, along with the values instilled by Omaram and his dedicated team of teachers.
