In 1995, Rajesh Bajrangi established Shri Gorakshanath Central Academy in his village Ghughli, UP. The school began modestly with only 50 students in a simple building. He encountered significant challenges, including financial limitations and societal obstacles. In a village where farming was the main source of income, many parents hesitated to enroll their children in school, choosing instead to have them assist with farm work.
Sharing his school’s journey, Rajesh shared, “Quality education is like a distant dream here in Ghughli, a small rural village of Maharajganj of Uttar Pradesh where most of the people depend on farming.” Not getting quality education was indeed a lack of educational opportunities for students in this region.
Children in this region faced a lack of educational opportunities, with no schools available within a 40-kilometer radius. However, the establishment of Shri Gorakshanath Central Academy, driven by the efforts of its visionary leader, became a significant turning point for the region. His inspiring journey is a testament to how passion, perseverance, and a deep commitment to community can bring about lasting change.

In Rajesh’s words, “A school is not just a place for learning. It is the heart of a community. When education thrives, so does the community.”
Rajesh had to address not only the lack of infrastructure but also the local community’s perception of education. He devoted himself to highlighting the significance of education as a key to a brighter future for both the children and the entire area.
It was his childhood inspiration to impact the education landscape in his hometown, as his father, a dedicated economics lecturer, always emphasized that education is a transformational tool. Seeing his father serving as a beacon of knowledge and having understood the upliftment of people and communities since his early years, he was very inspired.
After his post-graduation, he received his degree from Gorakhpur University. However, he was again drawn back into his roots, with a strong wish to return home and contribute to the betterment of his native place. The children of Ghughli were given little or no formal education in the locality, and this made a fire burn deep within him.
In his commitment to improving the lives of those around him, Rajesh has also employed over 150 local individuals, creating a ripple effect of positive change in the region. Teachers, support staff, and administrative workers from the surrounding villages found stable jobs, significantly contributing to the economic upliftment of the community. By providing jobs, he has not only enhanced educational opportunities but also helped strengthen the financial condition of the locals.
Undeterred By The Challenges
Running a school in such a remote location is never without challenge. The early financial struggles were daunting, but Rajesh’s perseverance paid off when the government’s donation came through. Beyond this, one of the key challenges was altering the mindset of the rural population, where education was often seen as less valuable compared to immediate economic contribution.
He increased the school’s reputation by engaging with parents, hosting community discussions, and showcasing the success stories of children who benefitted from formal education. His efforts built trust within the community, and more families began to see the long-term benefits of sending their children to school.

While the school’s growth has been extraordinary, the journey has not been without its setbacks. The initial survival of the academy was hampered by limited finances. Rajesh’s strong zeal for his work, however, did catch the attention of some local governmental leaders, which finally resulted in a government aid donation.
With financial support from Varthana, Rajesh expanded the school’s infrastructure, adding well-equipped classrooms, better facilities, and improved teaching staff. This not only enhanced the educational experience for students but also motivated parents to reconsider the value of formal schooling for their children. He shared, “Slowly but surely, my academy grew in reputation, with the support of Varthana, attracting students from Ghughli and nearby villages.”
“Today my school has expanded to an impressive total of 1,200 students growing from just 50 students, marking a significant achievement of my vision,” he added.
The academy gave students skills, knowledge, and confidence for college and jobs. Rajesh’s meaningful work shows how education acts as a tool for empowerment, benefiting not only many people but also the whole community.
But his vision for the future remains ambitious. He aims to introduce modern teaching methods, integrate technology, and provide even more resources to ensure that children from rural areas can compete on equal footing with their urban counterparts.
Shri Gorakshanath Central Academy is now serving as a regional hub for quality education, Rajesh hopes to expand its influence further, bringing more rural children into the fold of opportunity and development with Varthana’s support.
